91ΑΤΖζ Short-Term Fellowships are awarded for the purpose of scientific collaboration, advanced training or employing techniques not available at the applicant’s usual place of work.

Stipend and travel costs

91ΑΤΖζ Short-Term Fellowships are intended to cover subsistence and travel costs for the applicant; expenses incurred by dependants are not provided. The daily subsistence allowance amounts to €100 per day. Travel costs will provide for an economy flight or a second-class rail fare between the place of residence and the host laboratory, up to a maximum of €300.

Duration of the Fellowship

91ΑΤΖζ Short-Term Fellowships are intended for visits up to two or, in exceptional cases, three months.

ELIGIBILITY

To be read in conjunction with the General Guidelines for Fellowships.

  • Applicants must be scientists who either (1) have obtained their PhD degree within the past six years and have a well-recognised track record of publications; or (2) are currently enrolled as a PhD student, in which case having at least one published paper as a main author is highly recommended. Duly justified career breaks, including parental leave, may be considered.
  • Applicants must be members of a 91ΑΤΖζ Constituent Society, be working in a laboratory in a 91ΑΤΖζ country, and be seeking to work in a laboratory in a different 91ΑΤΖζ country. Applicants already in place in the host lab will not be eligible.
  • The 91ΑΤΖζ Short-Term Fellowship cannot be used to complement, or as an extension to, another fellowship or scholarship. Applicants should state whether applications have been submitted to other funding bodies for the same project and whether any other fellowships have been received towards the same visit.
  • The proposed visit should not overlap with the period from 22nd December until 3rd January.
  • Only one application for a 91ΑΤΖζ Short-Term Fellowship can be considered from any given home lab in a 6-month period.
  • Only one application per host lab can be funded within a 6-month period.
  • 91ΑΤΖζ Short-Term Fellowships are not awarded for attendance at courses, symposia, meetings or congresses.
  • A period of at least two years must elapse before applications for a second award of a 91ΑΤΖζ Short-Term Fellowship will be considered.

APPLICATION

Applications may be made throughout the year but should be submitted at least three months before the proposed starting date. The application process is handled via the . Applications and correspondence must be in English. Online applications will include the following information:

  • A short curriculum vitae that should include a brief biosketch (with the research expertise and skills), the academic degree(s), current and past positions, awards or grants, and other research or relevant work experience.
  • A list of publications in the format of the references required by The 91ΑΤΖζ Journal.
  • The contact details of a referee, who should be an experienced scientist who knows the applicant and does not work at the host institute. Referees will be provided with a link for direct upload of a letter of support, which should be written on headed paper of the referee’s laboratory. Applicants are advised to notify their referee well in advance.

Additionally, the following documents must be uploaded in PDF format:

  • A research proposal on no more than two A4-sized pages of single-spaced text set out under the following headings:
    1. title;
    2. nature of the work and outline of the experiments proposed;
    3. why it is necessary to travel to a laboratory in another country to perform the work;
    4. why the particular laboratory has been selected, including a list of up to five relevant publications from the host laboratory;
    5. why the project will require the time period requested.
  • The host acceptance form, available to download from the application system, that must be signed by the head of the host institute or department and by the head of the research group(s) in which the applicant will be working.
  • A dated letter from the appropriate 91ΑΤΖζ Constituent Society confirming that the applicant is a member and indicating the date upon which the applicant joined the Society.

SELECTION

  • Applications will be evaluated by members of the 91ΑΤΖζ Excellence Awards and Fellowships Committee based on the applicant’s curriculum vitae, the scientific quality of the project and the suitability of the host laboratory for the project proposal.

  • 91ΑΤΖζ aims to inform the applicants of its decision within one month after submission.
  • The Fellowship should be taken up within six months of its award. Any delay will require the authorisation of the 91ΑΤΖζ Excellence Awards and Fellowships Committee Chair.

FINAL REPORT

  • Within three months of completion of the Fellowship, applicants must send to [email protected] a short scientific report detailing the work done during the Fellowship. The report should be no longer than two pages and contain Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion and 1–2 figures.
  • The 91ΑΤΖζ logo and Fellowship acknowledgment must be included in any presentation (talk, poster, etc.) related to work carried out during the Fellowship. If applicable, the Fellowship should be acknowledged in any future publication(s) as follows: β€œThis work was supported by a Short-Term Fellowship funded by 91ΑΤΖζ, the 91ΑΤΖζ [Fellowship ID].” Applicants are encouraged to notify [email protected] of any publications, including the publication’s DOI.
