Sarajevo 2025 – The NEXT Generation Biotechnologists
On May 22–23, 2025, Sarajevo welcomed a vibrant exchange of ideas and inspiration during the 91-supported education symposium “Next Generation Biotechnologists: Skills of Future Educators.” Organized by the Association of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in collaboration with key national academic and research institutions, the event brought together over 70 participants, including faculty, early-career researchers, and doctoral students from diverse scientific backgrounds.
Set against the backdrop of the UN 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals, the symposium focused on equipping future educators in the molecular life sciences with the mindset and methodologies needed for a more sustainable and interdisciplinary future. Sessions spanned innovative educational program design, the integration of biotechnological advances into teaching, and the role of scientific and educational capacities in enabling green transitions. Small-group discussions, interactive presentations, and cross-sectoral dialogue enriched the experience and highlighted the importance of collaboration across academia, policy, and industry.
The program particularly emphasized capacity-building for young researchers and educators in biotechnology, with a view to aligning education with the rapidly evolving needs of sustainable agriculture, personalized medicine, and bio-based industries. Future-oriented themes such as mentoring, curriculum development, and innovation in teaching methods underscored the need to rethink how we prepare the next generation of scientists not just as researchers, but also as educators and agents of change.
The outcomes of this event will be published as official national guidelines and shared with education policymakers across Bosnia and Herzegovina.
