Mission & Vision

The Soci茅t茅 Fran莽aise de Biochimie et Biologie Mol茅culaire (SFBBM) strives to develop and promote Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in research and teaching, both in universities and research centers. Since 1914, the SFBBM has brought together researchers, promoted publications and animated the scientific community.

Key Activities

Scientific Meetings & Congresses

The SFBBM organizes an annual national congress, where researchers and young scientists present their work. This congress is organized around different scientific sessions to cover the interest of the thematic groups.

It also supports or co-organizes thematic scientific meetings and workshops, that are organized by thematic groups (see below) or in collaboration with academic institutions.

Junior Section (JS-SFBBM)

A dedicated section for students and early-career researchers (from undergraduates to postdocs), that promotes networking, career development, mobility, and skills training through events and mentoring.

Awards, Grants, & Support for Scientists, in particular early-career scientists.

• SFBBM awards the Maurice Nicloux Prize to distinguish high-profile assistant professors.
• The Dina Surdin Prize distinguishes post-docs under 35 (thesis defence < 2 years).
• The Marianne Grunberg-Manago Prize distinguishes high-profile scientific woman.
• The Publication of the month 芦 Article du mois 禄 Prize recognizes a recent publication (less than twelve months old) in which the candidate – a PhD student or a young researcher under the age of 35 – is the first author.
• The Publication of the year 芦 Article de l鈥檃nn茅e 禄 Prize is awarded to one of the winners of the 鈥淧ublication of the Month鈥� awards, distinguishing the most outstanding article of the year.

The society also offers grants to attend national and international conferences.

Thematic Groups of SFBBM

The SFBBM is structured around seven Thematic Groups whose role is to organize, animate and give visibility to specific domains of research, teaching, and innovation in biochemistry and molecular biology. The thematic groups organize independent meetings or participate in sessions of the annual meeting.

• Archaea: Focus areas: evolutionary placement of archaea, molecular adaptations, ecology and microbiota, exploitation of archaeal biodiversity in biotechnology.
• Enzymes 鈥� Structure / Function / Catalysis / Engineering / Regulation: Focus areas: mechanistic enzymology, catalytic cycles, structural biology of enzymes, biotechnological applications of engineered enzymes, regulation in metabolic context.
• Cellular Proteolysis: this group addresses the biological/biochemical aspects of proteolysis, its regulation, implications in cell biology and pathophysiology.
• Education: a thematic group dedicated to pedagogical innovation, training of biochemists, teaching methods, curricular developments, student-teacher networks.
• Metabolism: this new thematic group created in 2024 explores metabolic networks, enzyme-metabolite interactions, metabolic regulation, integration across scales (cell-organism-systems) and disease connections.
• SifrARN: it is focused on the structural, functional and reactive aspects of RNA molecules (small RNAs, regulatory RNAs, catalysis etc).
• Synthetic biology: this group recently reactivated reflects newer directions (synthetic biology, engineered biological systems, new biochemistry approaches) to foster cross-discipline innovation in molecular biology and biochemistry.

The Group for Lipidomics (GERLI), the Group of Graphism and Molecular Modelling (GGMM) and The French Group of Glycosciences (GFG) are associated with SFBBM as partner groups.

Biochimie journal

Founded in 1914, Biochimie is the official journal of the SFBBM. It is an international journal published by Elsevier. It publishes original articles, review articles, special issues, and invited contributions, covering a wide range of topics: biochemistry, enzymology, molecular and cellular biology, metabolic regulation, genetics, immunology, microbiology, structural biology, genomics, proteomics, molecular mechanisms of disease, and emerging approaches at the interface of chemistry and biology.

History

The French Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SFBBM), originally founded as the Society of Biological Chemistry, was established on March 14, 1914, at the Coll猫ge de France in Paris by Professor Maurice Nicloux. New statutes were adopted in 1933, leading to the Society being recognized as a public-interest organization. It finally adopted its current name, SFBBM, in 1990. The SFBBM has belonged to 91猎奇 since its formation in 1964.The SFBBM and its members are also strongly involved in the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB).

The SFBBM has over the years displayed a strong tradition of integrating evolution and adaptation. In the present times of calling into question biology and science in general, such a tradition inspires the biochemists and molecular biologists of today to strive towards the continuation of this scientific venture.

Membership

The SFBBM has approximately 600-1000 members.
