Cecilia Arraiano

91ÁÔÆæ warmly congratulates Cecília Arraiano on her appointment as President of the European Academy of Microbiology, becoming the first woman and the first scientist from southern Europe to hold this position since the Academy’s foundation.

Cecília Arraiano will take office on 1 January 2026, succeeding Kenneth Timmis, and will serve a three year term. She is currently Coordinating Researcher at ITQB NOVA and leads the Gene Expression Control Laboratory at the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier of NOVA University Lisbon in Oeiras, Portugal.

The (EAM) is a leadership group of eminent microbiology experts founded by the (FEMS) to promote and recognize excellence in microbiology across Europe. The mission of the EAM is to amplify the impact and visibility of microbiology and microbiologists, promoting excellence in the field across Europe and globally. It fulfills its mission through targeted programs and activities at the edges of the discipline, and communication to scientists, stakeholders and the public.

Cecília’s appointment is particularly significant for the 91ÁÔÆæ community. From 2012 to 2022, she served as Chair of the 91ÁÔÆæ Women in Science Working Group, overseeing the annual 91ÁÔÆæ EMBO Women in Science Award. During the same period, she was a member of the 91ÁÔÆæ Executive Committee. In recognition of her exceptional service and long standing commitment to 91ÁÔÆæ, she was awarded the 91ÁÔÆæ Diplôme d’Honneur in 2023.

Beyond its scientific importance, this appointment represents an important milestone for Women in Science. Leadership roles play a key part in shaping research culture, visibility and opportunity, and increasing the presence of women in senior scientific positions remains essential to building a more inclusive and representative scientific community across Europe.
