It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Professor Ada Yonath, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and Israel Prize recipient. A visionary pioneer in structural biology, Prof. Yonath leaves behind an indelible mark on global science, remembered not only for her landmark breakthroughs but for her extraordinary courage and perseverance in advancing the boundaries of human knowledge.
Prof. Yonath spent decades as a cornerstone of the Weizmann Institute of Science, where she completed her doctoral studies and later established Israel’s first laboratory for protein crystallography. In the late 1970s, she set her sights on a challenge that many in the scientific community believed to be impossible: determining the three-dimensional structure of the ribosome, the universal cellular machine responsible for translating genetic code into functional proteins.
Defying the prevailing consensus that ribosomes were too dynamic and fragile to crystallize, Prof. Yonath embarked on an extraordinary scientific journey defined by relentless determination. Through thousands of rigorous experiments, she developed pioneering techniques in crystallography that ultimately allowed her to generate the first high-resolution structural maps of the ribosome. This momentous achievement culminated in her being awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, alongside Venkatraman Ramakrishnan and Thomas A. Steitz.
Her research went far beyond fundamental biology; it carried profound implications for global health and medicine. By resolving the precise molecular architecture of the ribosome, Prof. Yonath’s work illuminated how dozens of different antibiotics bind to bacterial ribosomes to inhibit their growth. These insights provided the scientific foundation for understanding how bacteria develop resistance to existing therapies and opened entirely new pathways for designing novel, more effective antimicrobial drugs.
Prof. Yonath was also a generous and charismatic speaker who frequently shared her passion for discovery across the international scientific stage. Her memorable plenary lectures and active involvement in 91ÁÔÆæ Congresses and meetings—such as her inspiring presence at the joint 91ÁÔÆæ/IUBMB Congress in Seville in 2012—left a lasting impression on attendees, especially young scientists whom she consistently encouraged and mentored.
